: "Home" pregnancy tests do not detect low levels of HCG (the hormone detected by pregnancy testing), but if the test was positive, it may be early pregnancy.  At age 42, delayed ovulation is common, and pregnancy may have occurred very late in your last cycle.  Obtain a serum HCG test to be certain about possible pregnancy.

Waiting too long: If you do a home test and then let it sit beyond the 5 minutes the instructions indicate then the urine evaporates and often will show positive. That does not mean one is pregnant. It means the user did not follow the instructions on the test packaging.

Repeat: Repeat the pregnancy test in 4 to 5 days to be sure if pregnancy or not.

Pregnancy test: If you wait too long, perhaps over 10 minutes, to read your HPT, the urine dries and can leave a faint grey line. A faint line seen at the recommended time for the test indicates the presence of betaHCG in the urine and possible pregnancy. If you had a faint positive result, wait a couple of days and repeat the test.  If still only slight positive, see your doctor for a blood test.

May be: If you miss your period by 4-5 days, do a home pregnancy test. Use first morning urine and follow the instructions for the test carefully. The kit will state when to read the result and what constitutes a positive result.

You tell us: Only you know which brand of test you have and what the specific instructions say about the timing of reading the results. It sounds like when you were following the instructions you were not pregnant and the test was a valid one. After the test time frame is accomplished you throw it away.  You don't keep it and keep reading it as if a different result will appear.

Probably not: You're probably not pregnant if the repeat test was negative. You can wait a week and try again to be definitively sure.
