Probably: Eucalyptus has not been identified as a substance that exacerbates anemia in patients with G6PD deficiency.  The illness itself may be more of a trigger, however, the medical benefit of eucalyptus may not be enough to warrant any possible risk.  Plant extracts in general can be immunogenic and can cause a delayed inflammatory skin reaction in some cases. Would discuss with his physician.

can my g6pd kids use laundry liquid or body wash contains low concentration of eucalyptus oil or peppermint oil?

Accepted Answer

Sounds fine: Laundry detergents and bath soaps or body washes do not cause any more problems in G6PD kids compared with in non-G6PD kids. Restrictions for G6PD people are mainly about certain foods and certain medicines.

is it safe to use eucalyptus oil on a humidifier to for baby to help him breathe properly? also, what remedies can you suggest for a clogged nose?

No fragrances : The first months are complicated by narrow nasal passages which swell/close if exposed to dust,fragrances, smoke &amp; other irritants.Baby tries to flush these out of the nose  with mucous but this often ends as congestion &amp; produces rattling with breathing.The best rx is washing out the nose with saline &amp; suctioning the remainder. Eliminate irritants from babies environment &amp; this will happen less.

I never would: Infants &amp; toddlers have narrow nasal passages that are more sensitive to fumes,dust, and other air pollutants. It will often trigger drainage and internal swelling in the nose that increases work of breathing. The clean mist is fine, but I avoid such additives as oils or Vicks until school age.

can i put eucalyptus oil in my 7 month old baby's cool mist humidifier?

Accepted Answer

Yes: This is a very nice way to improve the humidity and also help decongest a baby without giving them medications. Don't forget the baby can use nasal saline drops too if congested. Put a couple of drops in the nose, gently massage, and then if he or she doesn't sneeze them out, use the bulb suctioner to clear out. Remember lots of cuddles too when baby not feeling well.

I would not: Nasal congestion at that age is aggravated by the smaller size of the nasal passages which make any swelling/drainage block things easier. I find ANY FUME/ODOR producing agent will act as a nasal irritant &amp; worsen things. I never suggest these things before school age, when the nasal passages are big enough to avoid this effect. Clean out the nose with saline wash &amp; use water in the humidifier.

I do not recommend: G6pd exists in different forms with different severity. Mild forms of the condition might tolerate soya bean oil where severe forms of the disease probably would not tolerate it. Given alternative formulas that would not have potential for hemolysis, i would recommend not using  s-26 for your infant.

OK, but clean well: You probably can use eucalyptus oil.  If you do, make sure that you thoroughly wash it out after use.  Vaporizers can get plugged up.  Another alternative is to use water with a pinch of salt as an alternative to their proprietary products
