Thyroid: I will try to be non-technical.  Hashimotos is a type of thyroid condtition where the thryoid builds up anti-bodies and sort of attacks itself.  Usually it starts out with the thyroid being very overactive.  Tests are usually done to prove or disprove this and tumor.  If this is the case, a thyroid blocker is used to reduce the production of thyroid hormone.  Low thyroid usually follows later.....

It tends to run in families and can be triggered by anything that can weaken the immune system such as poor nutrition especially vitamin d deficiency. It is common in celiac disease and gluten has been suggested as a trigger for hashimoto's in some people.Good sleep hygiene and exercise strengthen the immune system.

Treatment options: Usually hashimoto's burns out and you become hypothyroid, and then need lifelong levothyroxine.  In the interim, your thyroid levels may be normal and there is nothing much you can do except pay attention to your symptoms. Sometimes, hashi overlaps with graves and you can be hyperthyroid and the hyperthyroidism should be treated.  Sometimes the goiter can be very large, and this may cause symptoms.

Hashi and graves can overlap, and eye disease of graves can occur later, but rarely, so don't worry about it.
