when are epidural injections good for back disc hernation pain?

Rarely: There is controversy on this.  The neurology literature shows that it is rarely helpful, and then for a very limited time.  There are potential complications.  Therefore I do not recommend using it to treat  disc herniation pain.  Orthopedists generally have a different opinion about this topic, and use this treatment  more.  Bed rest and decompressing the disc help, unless there is motor weakness.

i have been on the  injection for quite some time  how soon can start back taking the pill if i did not get my last shot?

Accepted Answer

Depo Provera (medroxyprogesterone)?: I am guessing by "the injection" you are referring to depoprovera, a progesterone-only birth control shot given every 3 months.  F that is the case, you should start birth control pills at the same date your next shot should be -ie, 3 months after your last shot. If you wait any longer than 3 months  you need to use condoms with the first pill pack to avoid pregnancy.

is steriod injection beneficial for pain relating to degenerative changes in back or is it likely to give temporary releif only 4 this type of problem?

Temporary relief: For an 83 Y.O. Back with chronic degenerative disc disease, an epidural injection of the spine will only give temp relief to symptoms, but may last from 3-12 months in certain individuals!

can i go back to my normal activities right after getting artefill injections? i'd like to get artefill injections on my lunch break and then go back to work. is that reasonable?

may resume routine work - immediately
strenuous activities - after two days.

can i go back to work right after radiesse injections? i've read that there's no downtime after radiesse. is that right? i want to make an appointment to have it done on my lunch break. will i be able to go back to work right afterwards?

Yes, : Yes, you can go right back to work.  Keep ice on the area right after the injection to decrease the chance of bruising.

Accepted Answer

Nerve stimulation: It is most likely the nerves that emanate from your spinal cord, that innervate your legs, are being stimulated from the injection.  If it persists, call your dr for an evaluation.  Good luck to you.

Was more common..: Less common today, since some studies cast doubt on serious benefitss.  In my experience they appeared to help.  However, their is no coding specific for facet blocks, so that doctors can bill. These are called cpt codes and facet injection was removed 1/1/11. Nonetheless, a common procedure, which if done properly will not hurt.

what are the side effects of lumbar steriod injections?

Accepted Answer

Minimal : Sometimes a rash or heat sensation can occur.  If you have a significant case of diabetes, your glucose levels can be affected.  Occasionally, a headache can occur or local back pain or pressure sensation from the injection.  These all tend to resolve quickly.

i have had several injections in my back for a bulging disc to no avail.can you recommend something else?

Accepted Answer

Depends : It depends on your symptoms . Ofcourse medications and physical therapy. You may be a candidate for a radio frequency ablation of the facet joint nerves or if you have lower extremity symptoms maybe even a spinal cord stimulator trial.

LESI: May or may not help, depending upon if the injections can truly diminish inflammation around the nerves/nerve roots. May not help if primarily thickened scar or boney spur is the primary problem.
