Good: if it works, then use it! steroids are preferably not used longterm, but this is a "topical" steroid for the intestine. there are other things to consider when choosing therapy for IBD, talk to your gastroenterologist

i was diagnosed with lymphocytic colitis 4 years ago and given entocort ec for treatment. will it ever go away for good or is it a lifelong illness?

Impossible to say...: The likelihood of "cure" of your microscopic colitis depends in part on your medication compliance, clarifying the diagnosis, and avoiding use of nsaid's (like aleve, (naproxen) advil, motrin, etc.).  Talk with your doctor about alternative medications to entocort for long-term use, if needed.

For isolated disease: it is an oral medication, usually taken as 9 mg once daily. It is used to induce a remission in Crohn's disease when the Crohn's is isolated to the terminal ileum (end of the small intestine).

Pain & bloody stools: Crohns disease is an inflammatory bowel disorder which causes bloody stools and pain.  Cholestyramine & end ivory are medications.

Accepted Answer

VSL#3: VSL #3 is a fairly well studied and respected probiotic. The Entocort is a corticosteroid.  The two should be fine together, but check with your Gastoenterologist, and make sure you always list supplements like VSL #3  when you review your medications with your doctors.

is it safe to receive pneumococcal & flu vaccines whilst on entocort, also due to start azathioprine soon... is this a problem ?(treatment res sprue)

They are safe: When patients are on immunosuppressive we strongly recommend that you stay caught up on vaccines.  Both vaccines you are speaking about are non live vaccines and are safe to take while you are on Entocort and Azathioprine. Both vaccines require some time to become fully protective so get them sooner then later Good luck.

hello my current episode has been 2 months of alternating constipation and diarrhea. ive been given entocort and vivomixx and altosec and now librax. they all help for a little while and then the pain and cramps and constipation and diarrhea come bk?

Dietary or Medical?: It's better to know the cause of your symptoms, if possible. Changes in bowel habits can be dietary, from surgery (like having your gallbladder removed), medication, inflammatory bowel disease (Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn), chronic bowel infections, or even psychological stress. Ask your doctor for suggestions of the cause - you may need testing, or a different medication.

could you take ibuprofen (an nsaid) and bupropion (steroid) if you are taking entocort (a corticosteroid)?

Accepted Answer

Yes: bupropion is not a steroid, and I am not aware of any contraindications to your drug combinations, but would just express some concern that steroids increase the chances of stomach ulcers and bleeding, and NSAIDs may worsen this. Talk to your doctor about using something to protect your stomach (sucralfate, prilosec and others) if stomach upset is present, or even as prevention.

Both: It acts locally but then it is completely absorbed by the intestine.  Following this 80-90% is metabolized by the liver before it reaches the rest of the body (1st pass). However some systemic effect still occurs.
