hello, i've had enlarged lymph nodes for 5 months doc said it was fine and had chest x ray and bloods were clear the are soft and roll under my thumb i'm also very skinny they haven't changed size or any other way is this normal and okay?

: Lymph nodes are located throughout the body, generally noticeable in exposed areas like the neck. They are usually pea sized at rest and enlarged when stimulated by bug bites, dermatitis, drainage or infection. They usually return to resting size in 4-6 wks unless stimulation remains. They rarely can become damaged by infection; grow to golf ball size; need drainage or removal.

Unlikely: While possible in a slim patient with a Very enlarged supraclavicular node, normally the chest x-ray would look unremarkable and you'd need a chest CT to identify this finding.

Not always: A typical chest xray is not very sensitive in finding abnormal lymph nodes.  The best radiographic tests are chest cat scan and pet/cat scan when indicated.

May be: It may or may not. The procedure of choice is ultrasound by an eperienced sonographer. Xr is not a great exam for lymph nodes. Even better: have it examined by a doc. Usually this is palpable on physical examination and most examinations are not helpful.

i have pneumonia, my chest x-ray is showing a hilar mass or hilar lymphadenopathy. would this be caused my the pneumonia?

Talk to your doctor: This is a potentially very severe situation.  The adenopathy or hilar mass may be causing a post-obstructive pneumonia, or the hilar lesions and the pulmonary infiltrates may be part of a single entity such as sarcoidosis.   This should be discussed at length with the doctor caring for you.

what does it mean to have lymphadenopathy on chest x-ray?

Accepted Answer

Several causes: Lymphadenopathy can be due to both benign and malignant causes. Benign causes include sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, and other disorders. Cancer or lymphoma can cause lymphadenopathy. This needs to be further evaluated by a physical examination, possibly a ct scan, and possibly a biopsy.
