Accepted Answer

Try: A Fleet mineral oil enema. hold it in for 30 minutes if possible and lying on your left side with feet on a pillow above your hips. Once cleared, to avoid recurrence, make sure you are drinking 80-100 oz of caffeine free/alcohol free fluid daily.

how do u know if you have fecal impact or is it constipation? some days i have liquid stool leaks and some days i don't, help, enema uses help?

: It's true that liquid feces can leak out around a fecal impaction, but it's characteristic to have urge for a BM with associated abdominal cramping which can be severe. Abdominal distension my also be present.  Impactions require manual removal by a health professional if soap suds enemas aren't successful.

He might not have: heard about a new drug Linaclotide for that. Also, if you are on narcotics, fiber won't help but newer drugs like relistor would be very helpful

See a GI doctor.: At this point if the enemas are not helping, you need to be properly evaluated for a possible obstruction. See a gastroenterologist.

Consideration: The most frequent use of an enema is to relieve constipation or for bowel cleansing before a medical examination or "procedure". With what product and at what frequency are you concerned?

Not a problem: To address constipation you may increase your intake of fiber foods and drink enough water so that your urine is mostly colorless. Alternatively you may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex. 
Get HPV vaccine.

Mucus on stool: Mucus discharge occurs in up to 50% of patients with irritable bowel syndrome, with or without pain. Mucus may also be produced in response to partial obstruction, chronic constipation, rectal dysfunction, infection, &amp;even from secretory villous tumors of the rectum, among others.

Depends, maybe: Depending upon the extent of impaction and the hardness and density of the stool, salt water or mineral water enemas may help (the latter is more comfortable due to lubrication of the anal canal). If these strategies along with laxatives fail, you need an evaluation by an ER doctor or a gastrointerologist to assess for location of the impaction to develop a reasonable treatment plan.

Perhaps...: Enemas are almost never used in my pediatric practice, so the 1st concern is what  triggered the need for an enema? I would never recommend an enema for your child unless specifically ordered by your pediatrician. The type of enema used may have caused the mucous--or perhaps this mucous was due to the irritant effect of whatever made the use of an enema necessary. If bloody, call your doctor now.

why is there bloody mucus in my stool after an enema? should i be worried?

Accepted Answer

Possibly: Blood tinged  discharge can be related to trauma from the enema but it should be evaluated with direct visualization (ie. Colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy) to make sure it is not related to proctitis (inflammation) or a polyp or cancer.
