can a capsule endoscopy replace an upper endoscopy &colonoscopy for a 3 year old? is the same prep required for the capsule endoscopy?

Possibly: If you are at an academic center working with pediatric GI and radiology specialists, this can be a great alternative if you just need to look. If they think biopsies are going to be needed, then won't work. And, unfortunately, you do need pretty much the same cleanout so you can get good images form the camera and be able to see what is really going on. Child also has to be able to swallow camera

No: If you are adequetly hydrated and has no nausea vomiting fever chills or belly pain, you should be ok with prep. Let your gastroenterologist be aware of it.

Not risky: your ED syndrome will not be an issue. These procedures are performed using a very short acting sedative and very safe in the hands of a skilled endoscopist.

Of course: For endoscopy, sedation is routinely offered and in your case clearly desirable.  Keep in mind the test lasts only 3-5 minutes.  Talk with your doctor about what sedation options you can have at the center where your test will be performed.

Accepted Answer

Usual medications: Nothing special needs to be taken after these procedures unless directed by your doctor.  You can resume your usual medication unless you are taking aspirin and had a polyp removed or biopsy performed.  If so you should wait a week after the procedure before resuming the aspirin.

Depends: There is no such thing as safe or not safe drug.  Each individual may have co-morbidities that may influence an anesthesiologist to use a particular drug, but the key is titrating whatever drug is used.

Ask your doc: Usually before you go in for egd (upper endoscopy), your performing doc would send instructions outlining what you can do and when. If you have not received those, you may call his office to ask for those. Different docs have their own preferences.

i am scheduled for a endoscopy and the next day a hida scan.i was told not to take any meds 24 hrs befor hida. will the endoscopy be ok to have first?

Probably, but...: You were given very specific instructions to avoid medications 24 hours before your biliary scan.  If you are planning to have your endoscopy less than 24 hours before the hida, please alert your anesthesiologist to avoid endoscopic sedatives that might alter gallbladder ; bile duct motility. If these drugs cannot be avoided, then reschedule to ensure your test(s)' best/most accurate  result(s).

Avoid confusion: If we answer - even w/ good reason to believe what we say - and the service you use has another policy, you'll be unnecessarily confused and therefore.....  The best thing is to ask them what they usually do and if they allow options. Also, use that opportunity to ask any other ?'s you have. Good luck!

I would ask: My endocopist if i can take pain meds with small amount of water 3-4 hrs prior to procedure. Many will allow it.
