Yes.: The rast (radioallergosorbent test) detects the presence of ige antibodies to a specific allergen.  A score taken from the rast test is compared to predictive values, and if it is higher, the patient has a >95% chance of an allergic reaction to that allergen.  This can test many allergens at one time.  Values are available for the following foods: milk, egg, peanut, fish, soy, and wheat.

i recently had a ige blood test for food allergies. the results can back at tomatoes: moderate wheat: low and soy: low. what does this mean?

Difficult to say: The blood IGE tests are good markers for allergies but need to be put into the context of you personal history and  exam findings. In general,  this could mean you may break or have digestive issues with tomatoes and less problems with wheat and soy.Each testing center gives a range and general meaning that you should get from the doc that ordered the test.High IGE levels require special plans.

Yes: This is called "rast" testing.  Though generally not as accurate as skin testing, blood allergy testing can be done in young children or in adults that are taking medications that would interfere with skin testing.  It is also used in patients with skin problems that would prevent them from having skin testing.

No: Tests must be ordered specifically for food allergies. Even then the results must be correlated with the clinical findings. A complete blood test focuses only on the number and types of cells measured and has nothing to do with measurement on their functions. 
Food allergy can be detected by prick skin testing or ImmunoCap IgE blood test- neither is fool-proof.

IgE antibodies: Are what being measured in your blood if we suspect allergy to specific foods, those antibodies are produced and stay there, means you were exposed and developed allergy to the food element in question, the food doesn't have to be currently present in your body, and could have been eaten years earlier

Food allergy: Ignoring foods that you are highly allergic to can be disastrous and lead to severe morbidity or death. The real question is whether you are really allergic to the foods that have shown up on blood test. It is imperative that a proper history be taken, preferably by an allergist, and then selective allergy testing - skin or blood,  be performed. If tests are equivocal, an oral challenge canhelp.

Skin test: Skin tests performed by board certified allergists are very reliable and give you immediate results on a variety of allergies, food, environmental allergens, etc. Consult an allergist for your answers.

Anaphylaxis: Even though one tests negative, one can still develop anaphylaxis by an overwhelming exposure to the food involved.

Maybe,maybe not: The test would suggest you have no indication of an allergic response to the items tested.This would suggest you will not be troubled by a bad reaction to those items for your life, but you can develop a food allergy or intolerance later in life. Most food allergies are not of the anaphylaxis type, but produce hives or other symptoms.

if i have a positive quest diagnostics blood test for a food allergy, could a skin test give a stronger confirmation? so many positives for foods!

Accepted Answer

Blood tests: for food allergies are somewhat unreliable - as there are many problems with cross reactivities on the assays. Unless you have  had a particular event like you were unable to breathe or throat swelling after eating a particular food and are sure there was nothing else causing it- then these results may not be clinically important. Pollen/ and environmental allergy testing is much more reliable.
