my haptoglobin level is elevated, at 2.65 g/l (ref. 0.17-2.00). is this in and of itself a cause for concern (e.g. cancer)? i have also been experiencing low iron/hemoglobin/hematocrit for some time. kidney/liver function normal. gi tract is clear.

See below: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, your haptoglobin level per se is not a cause for concern.

No not normal: You are lucky that you developed blood clot in a non essential organ.  If this were your heart or brain where blood clot formed or travelled, it could have been life-threatening or at least severe impairment would have resulted.  See a blood specialist, hematologist, for an opinion whether you should be on anticoagulation.

: How high are they?
If you are living in high altitude or if you are fasting too long with mild dehydration, those numbers can be elevated.
For us, we are only concerned if Hct is persistently above 55%.
High Hb and Hct (Erythrocytosis) are usually less significant unless the other counts (white cell and/or platelet counts) are also high (polycythemia).

Anemia: Can be due to blood loss such as gastrointestinal bleeding or impaired bone marrow production due to infection, medication, vitamin deficiency or a disease of the bone marrow.

See below.: Many causes. If the elevation is mild this may be nothing. Dehydration could be a part.  True causes of elevated indices include living at high altitude. Smoking, exposure to carbon monoxide. Decreased lung function. Use of testosterone.

Why worry?: How do you FEEL? You may just have small red cells and your body is fully compensated -- my reds are pint-sized as well. You may even have a small dose of a thalassemia trait. You also know that reference ranges are arbitrarily set so that several percent of folks fall outside. What you describe is NEVER worrisome. Do ask your physician whether you have thal minor -- it's worth knowing

It isn't: Most of the time, the hemoglobin and hematocrit are not elevated in the patient with congestive heart failure.  Rare instances where this might occur include polycythemia vera, excessive transfusion, or a COPD patient with chronic hypoxia who happens to have heart failure as well.

Various: Causes of high counts can be due to a variety of reasons, some include infections, environmental factors, bone marrow disorders and cancer.  You should see your local hematologist to determine cause and management.

Yes: A woman may retain fluid at this time
