Increased heart rate: It is reassuring that the Holter monitor is negative.  Some of the other symptoms may suggest an underlying connective tissue disease.  It is critical to have a knowledge of family history and I recommend evaluation by a rheumatologist.

my wife had a day surgery for endometriosis treatment today and surgery went well. but during recovery, her heart rate elevated sometimes up to 145. ?

For how long?: If she's having copious bleeding, she should return for another look immediately. That said, pain, which is expected immediately after surgery, causes a rapid HR but it should gradually slow as she becomes more comfortable. If this is the case, rest and pain medication is the way to go. Be sure she's taking liquids well (to replace the lost blood volume). Warm wishes to you both.

See a doctor today: You could have a blood clot in the leg. If you are are having any shortness of breath, chest pain, palpitations, or your pulse is over 100 at rest - you should go to the Emergency Room now to get tested.

R&R: If it's 100-120, rest and relax. If it's &gt;160, go to an er. If it's in between, try the first and resort to the second.

Anxiety, thyroid?: Chronic stress, hyperthyroidism, poor fitness, obesity, medications can all cause your resting heart rate to be increased. Your physician should be able to investigate further and manage accordingly.

can hiking at a higher elevation (8000ft) lead to elevated heart rate i.e. around 170bpm? at sea level, i am a frequent runner so i'm used to higher heart rates, but not such abrupt rises while only hiking. thanks?

: At 8000 feet the effective oxygen concentration is 15-16% , significantly less than the 20%  at sea level. This factor alone would be expected to trigger in increase in heart &amp; respiratory weight at rest and with any exertion.

No: Fat loss is a simple consequence of burning more calories than one takes in.
Exercise does not have to be a part of that equation.

No: While taking large amounts of thyroid medication can be fatal.....one extra 100mcg tablet should not cause any damage!

how common is primary hypertension and elevated heart rate in a fit 17yr old boy? is it more common to be hypertension due to a secondary cause?

GOOD THINKING!: Good thinking!  definitely consider increased thyroid hormone levels, as well as cardiac and renal causes.  Thyroid profile, blood chemistry, ekg; if abnormal – echocardiogram.  Your family physician will do it all.

Depends: Depends on how high the heart rate, for how long it remains so, the underlying heart condition and the reason for the high heart rate.  Please talk to your doctor and perhaps see a cardiologist if you have recurrent problems.
