my son is in the hospital on iv fluids everytime he goes in his temp spikes why? is there any relations to the content of the fl went in hospital with vomiting, cramping and runny stools, since being on iv he now is spiking a temp often

He : He is more likely spiking a fever from the illness that brought him into the hospital than from the IV fluids.  Fevers in general are not dangerous and are just the body's way of fighting off infection.  If you have any specific questions about his care, you should speak with the doctors caring for him. Because alcohol: depletes  minerals such as Magnesium via urine,  the electrolyte drinks replenish these deficiencies.  It also corrects dehydration.

No: Fluid & electrolyte balance in the peri-operative time period is highly variable. It depends on a person's medical conditions before surgery such as heart failure or kidney disease. It depends on medications used before surgery. It depends if the surgery was long, complicated, emergency, or due to sepsis. Fluid retention & electrolyte imbalance early after major surgery is common & correctable.

Vagal reflex?: There are many causes of syncope, and one of the most common is a nerve reflex, called a vasovagal reflex, that can suddenly drop the heart rate and blood pressure. This occurs most commonly in the setting of dehydration. Electrolytes can be normal even when one is mildly dehydrated, so drinking more fluids is a reasonable first step. But further work up is needed if episodes continue.

Bloodwork: Usually a &quot;basic metabolic panel&quot;, a type of blood sample, can measure most relevant electrolytes in the blood. A few more measurements include urine &amp; stool output, intravenous intake, dietary intake, &amp; urine electrolytes &amp; osmolality.

: There is a test using Evans Blue to measure extracellular fluid volume, but we physicians don't use it. Instead we know that depletion of extracellular volume leads to depletion &amp; contraction of circulating &amp; intracellular volume anyway. Serum sodium &amp; chloride can be high or  low  and BUN generally high  in this setting.

Labs: If you blood urea nitrogen is elevated it means you are dry and need more hydration.  Elevated sugar makes diabetics frequently urinate which can lead to dehydration.
