Yes, but not much: Most CHF patient are treated with diuretics, to remove fluid from circulation. In some instances, depending on the cause of CHF, we might give a modest amount of fluid to keep the heart filled properly so it can pump.

she has chf and severely retaining fluid. she's in pain from it and can't have fluid drained yet. what can be done to relieve the pressure and pain?

CHF: I would start with 50 mg of spironolactone and probenecid 500 mg bid. Probenecid is a positive inotrope and greatly improves cardiac function! Measure results be decreasing edema and a falling BNP assay!

Accepted Answer

Restrict salt: Salt intake causes fluid retention. Heart failure patients need to monitor the amount of salt in the foods they consume. The salt intake should be no more than 2-4 grams daily, less if someone has severe failure. Fluid intake also needs to be restricted to 1.5 liters per day or less, depending on the doctor's recommendation.

i have chf what happens when lasix (furosemide) no longer keeps the fluid off?

Several things: You may need to restrict your salt and fluid intake.  You may need a higher dose of Lasix (furosemide) or change to another loop diuretic. You may need additional diuretics which are complementary to the  lasix (furosemide).  Sometimes lying down and resting after taking the Lasix (furosemide) helps mobilize the fluid.  Please talk to your doctor about it.

according to my echo exams, in 2013 my ef was 71 percent. in 2015 it was 61 percent. is it normal for ef to decline that much in 2 years? does it fluctuate or just keep going down? does this mean i have chf? i have appt. for new echo this month?

: EF above 50% is considered normal so most echo report will give result EF above 50%, not commonly reported in details as your result.  EF above 71% implies hyperdynamic heart and it is usually present in patient with hypertension so 71% does not mean better than 61%. You should only concern if EF drops below 50%. Furthermore, there is significant variability in sonographers and interpreters.

Both: CHF  can cause fluid to accumulate both in the lung tissue itself ( called pulmonary edema)  and the chest cavity surrounding the lungs. This is called the pleural space.

From where?: Leaking from the injection site? If you're edematous (swollen) at the injection site, it will leak and the edema needs to be addressed. If you're not edematous (swollen), it's probably just a matter of the injection site sealing slowly and you should apply pressure to it till it's dry.

why does fluid build up around the lungs in congestive heart failure (chf)?

Accepted Answer

Inadequate pump: The heart is actually 2 pumps. The right side pumps blood to the lungs. This is generally low pressure system so unless there are other reasons the right ventricle tends to function pretty effectively. The left side is the workhorse pump. The left ventricle is a muscle that can pump a large amount of resistance. When it fails the blood backs up into the lungs because the two pumps are in series.
