Life and guarantees: The only things guaranteed in life are "death and taxes."  As for EEG tests, the Epilepsy Foundation says "a normal EEG does not mean that you did not have a seizure... one-half of all EEGs done for patients with seizures are interpreted as normal. Even someone who has seizures every week can have a normal EEG test... because the EEG only shows brain activity during the time of the test."

Doctor can evaluate: An EEG is to look for abnormal brainwaves that might cause seizures. In a normal child, one spell does not equal epilepsy. It all depends on the big picture. Sometimes an EEG is done; sometimes not done. Babies and toddlers (age range 6 months to 5 years) can have a seizure, usually at the start of a febrile illness. No special tests are needed for a single simple febrile seizure.

Observation: "idiopathic" means that the exact cause is unknown...Other than direct observational monitoring, there is no usual test. Some imaging studies such as pet scanning can be helpful in identifying the location or "focus" of  the seizures...I would strongly recommend that you talk to your neurologist about this..It is very important to c follow his/her medical instructions and medication recommendation.

EEG + clinical : findings are vital to determine the type of seizure or epilepsy, which helps direct choice of Anti-Epileptic Drug, necessity for further studies &amp;, often, prognosis. Many epileptic syndromes have been found, so there are fewer diagnoses of "Idiopathic Epilepsy", especially in infants &amp; children. i had a 10 hour eeg, was completely normal and i had 2 of my episodes during the eeg, but the neuro says the test was normal, does this rule out epilepsy since my events did not cause abnormal brain activity?

: It is the brain abnormal activity causing unexplained motor activity not the other way around. The differential diagnosis will include now other possible conditions that may explain your episodes, your neurologist will be able to clarify.

EEg is gold standard: EEG is the gold standard for diagnosing epilepsy.  sometimes a regular EEG doesn't pick up the seizure focus, and a more prolonged EEG has to be done, such as a 24 hour ambulatory EEG in which you go home with it on so that your brain activity can be monitored for 24 hours.  This increases the chance of catching the seizure.  Pet scans can pick up seizures, but they are not yet approved for this.

NeedToSeeNeurologist: Your Doctor did the right tests as there is abnormality shown on MRI which you describe Glios?Has to be either Gliosis or Gliostoma.I advice you consult a Pediatric Neurologist and follow his/her advice asap.Discuss this with your son's Pediatrician.You did not say how old your son is.

5 years ago i was diagnosed with epilepsy after 1 seizure(in a stressful situation) with an eeg test(+normal mri results).could it be wrong/sth else?

My response: First, epilepsy means more than one seizure, and you had a solitary event.  Second, the diagnosis was probably correct, and your EEG likely showed abnormal findings c/w a risk for further events.  But if you have been stable for 5 yrs, seems worthwhile to repeat EEG, if you are on medicines and see if you could taper off.
Discuss with local neurologist.

i am 25 yrs old. never had seizure. nor did anyone in my family. i also had normal eeg and brain mri 3 yrs ago. though, i am deathly afraid of getting one. what are the chances of adult getting epilepsy? can i do additional tests to calm my midn?

: Seizures can occur at any age.
Contributing factors can be head trauma,too much ingestion of alcohol as well as very poor sleeping habits. If you never had a seizure in the past and recent negative EEG and brain MRI ; no need to keep on testing
