i had a complete metabolic panel lab test done and my gap anion came back elevated at 19. i also have edema in both legs. should i be worried?

Edema of greater: Concern. An anion gap of 19 is above normal, but by itself is not a danger signal. However, edema in both legs is a cause for concern. Please discuss the lab results as well as the leg edema with the doctor who ordered the tests.

i have non-pitting edema in both legs, worse in left. i take 40mg lasix (furosemide) & potassim plue elevating legs. now very painful with blisters. what is this?

Edema: Nephrotic syndrome.  Check a leg us and a urinalysis.

Depends on the cause: There can be many different causes of edema, from congestive heart failure to liver failure to obstruction from a tumor to leaky valves in the veins of the legs.  Thus, the cure, if there is one, depends on the underlying cause.  So does the treatment.  See your primary care provider to discuss why you have the edema and what can be done about it.

Pulm hypertension: After a pulmonary embolism, (blood clot in the lungs) there can be high blood pressure in the lungs, (pulmonary hypertension) causing the blood to back up into the leg veins. An echocardiogram could help to find this out. Blood clots in legs is possible, but less likely since both legs are involved. A blockage of the veins in the pelvis is possible too. You should see your doctor about this soon.

See specialist: To young for heart problems, but sometimes a cardiomyopathy (malfunction) heart can occur. Right sided failute or dysfunction, liver problems or circulatory insufficiency.

Elevation: Keeping your legs elevated generally reduces swelling; diuretics can be used also but something that should be prescribed after a full evaluation.

Accepted Answer

: Less likely an expired Nexplanon can cause pitting edema. Usually, medication can still be used 1-2 years after expiration date.
If you have used Nexplanon for a long time, systemic disease which can cause leg edema such as kidney, heart or liver disease needs to be ruled out. Leg venous thrombosis rarely causes bilateral pitting edema of both legs.
A late side effect of Nexplanon can be leg edema

: I do not think that having gallstones could cause bilateral pitting edema, however gallstones are more likely to be seen in overweight and obese people so also is pitting edema more likely occur in the same group of people. There is no direct pathway for both to occur, but could have associations for different reasons like being overweight or abnormalities in the liver processes.

Treat neuropathy: I would suggest a combination of Cymbalta and lyrica (pregabalin).  Lumbar sympathetic blocks may help.  Does your doctor know?
