Good question: It is felt that this is a genetic condition realated to the early exposure of antigens in this population.  As time passes and the body becomes more tolerant to the environment it tends to be mitigated in nearly 3/4 of involved patients.

No cure.: Eczema or atopic dermatitis is a complex condition mainly due to an inborn defect in the skin's ability to retain water. It requires daily attention for successful control. The first even has brand name recommendations for skin care products and both have links to other useful sites.

are children with eczema likely to be clingy?

Accepted Answer

Clingy or itchy??: If a child has severe eczema they suffer from itchy skin which can make them clingy.  Severe itching makes the child very irritable and may need treatment with something like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) before bed.  The itchy skin can also interfere with sleep and contribute to irritability.  A good moisturizer can help plus wet to dry soaks before bed.  Your doctor can recommend appropriate medicated creams.

Atopic diseases: "atopic diseases" including allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis or eczema, and asthma do appear to have genetic influence.  If one parent has an atopic disease, the likelihood that there children will have atopy is increased.  There is large variation in expression.

None: Eczema has no " cure"= there are great ways to avoid triggers and treat flares- but as far as taking something or undergoing some treatment to completely be "cured" - none that i know of.. Sorry - - good luck!

No: The term eczema has been used interchangeably with atopic dermatitis.  Eczematoid lesions in infant include atopic dermatitis which starts as early as 4 weeks of age.

Not Known: I am not aware of any evidence that it works for eczema or doesn't.Also not aware of studies as to whether it is safe for kids.

Don't use: Ginko has many interactions with medications and its safety in children is not well established.

Ginko interferes with the way the liver metabolizes certain medications.

Talk to your pediatrician and dermatilogist about this.  Don't use.

Accepted Answer

Moisturizers: Anything over the counter that can help moisturize the skin will be beneficial.  I personally like eucerin cream.  Its available in large jars and if you "drip dry" and apply liberally, it will help seal in the moisture and help the skin heal.
