what is dural ectasia?

Widened Dural sac: The covering around the spinal cord consist of several layers one of which is called the Dura. When this covering or sad about the spinal cord is widened in certain areas where it normally is not then the result may be herniation of nerve roots. There are several associations of congenital syndromes such as Marfan's and neurofibromatosis which can be seen with this type of presentation.

Size: Ectasia is usually a slight dilation and perhaps a long segment.
Aneurysm is a significant dilation 2- 2.5 times normal and frequently a shorter length of involved vessel, but not always.
Ectasia can expand to aneurysm size over time.
Large aneurysms have a rupture risk an require intervention- surgery.

No: Depending on your body surface area, it may even be normal for your size. If there is any family hx of aneurysms or if you smoke (or used to smoke), you should have the study repeated in a year to confirm stability.

Corneal thickness: Ectasia is not common unless the cornea is  thin. Ask your lasik surgeon if your corneal thickness is normal after lasik. If so, and you don't  rub your eyes, the risk is low. Eye rubbing may increase the risk of ectasia.

Yes: Per Mayo Clinic: "Cigarette smoking may be associated with widening of milk ducts, which can lead to inflammation and, possibly, mammary duct ectasia." REF:  https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/mammary-duct-ectasia/symptoms-causes/syc-20374801. However it may occur in non-smokers.

NO: the cause of the ectasia must be determined.. Antibiotics are only used for bacterial infections.

Not necessarily: Dural ectasia is one of the major ghent criteria for the diagnosis; present in around 60 percent of mfs patients. You stay away from certain activities (lifting heavy weights, etc) if your dr advice; those might make it worse. But please check www.Marfan.Org, and remember stanford and mayo clinic, among other centers, have dedicated departments and lots of research going on. Don t get discouraged!

Ectasia: Mammary duct ectasia is not considered a risk factor for breast cancer. If you have any persistent breast discomfort or lumps however, I feel it's important to be evaluated and followed by a breast surgeon.

Not common: There are special testing which can be done, i would suggest they be done by a corneal specialist.  But the hallmark is unstable refractions, caused by unstable or changing corneas.

Yes &amp; yes: Mammary duct ectasia can be unilateral. It is seem most often in women who are 45 to 55.
