If the wax has dried and "impacted",  using a product such as ceruminex before hand can soften the wax and enable it to be washed out.

It in an emollient for the sensitive, fragile skin of the ear canal and it helps prevent excessive bacterial and fungal growth in the ear canal.  It is secreted by glands in the skin on the canal.  The body has ways of getting it out and any attempts with cotton swabs can make it worse by pushing towards the ear drum.
