does amoxicillin affect other medications like, zoloft (sertraline) or tri sprintec birth control? my ear drum ruptured last night and i went to the doctors today and they prescribed amoxicillin to me.  i have also been sick with a cough for over a week.

There : There is no interaction between zoloft (sertraline) and amoxicillin. As far as the sprintec is concerned, there is an on going debate regarding this. Some doctors believe that antibiotics decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills while others do not. The research is not conclusive. Personally I do not put my paients on a back up method while taking antibiotics but some doctors do.This is up to you and your provider.

Usually painful: A ruptured ear drum is usually caused by trauma, either direct like pushing a qtip through or pressure related...You got slapped right over the ear and the pressure caused the drum to pop. It can also rupture from infected fluid underneath. Spontaneous rupture can also occur, no warning. Pts often describe a hollow, echoing feelings after rupture. Hearing loss can also occur. TREAT THE CAUSE: If it is sponntaneous rupture dut to an infection, you need antibiotics and pain meds and there is healing on its own
but if it is traumatic due to puncture with a sharp object than wait for two months and if it does not heal than surgery called tymanoplasty can be done to close the hole.

Pain, bleeding,airin: Pain with trace bleeding and hearing loss via air conduction are the most common initial symptoms. However, it can be nearly a symptomatic from chronic infection. If you have any concerns, see an ENT for an evaluation.

Keep the ear dry: An itchy ear can be a sign of an infection or a recent injury. Best way to tell is have the ear examined. To prevent infections keep it dry by placing a waterproof ear plug or place cotton in the ear and seal the outside with vaseline. Long term a tympanoplasty which closes the hole may reduce the issues and improve healing.

Will heal by itself: If the ruptured ear drum is spontaneous it will heal and seal by itself and no treatment is needed and it heals naturally.Iit can also be caused by puncure of the ear drum by a sharp object.You can use a heating pad , place a cooton ball in the ear when showering.
