Red not normal: Red and swollen is not normal. It is a sign of inflammation and possibly infection. As far as to whether you use a regular earring or a bar, it depends on what you want in the end. If you are only going to be putting regular earrings in, this will be fine to use for your initial piercing. If you plan to use thicker jewelry, you would need a bar.

Infection: Apply warm moist compresses several times a day. Continue the antiseptic ointment according to instructions. Apply small amount of rubbing alcohol on surrounding skin to kill staph. If no improvement or if increase in swelling, spreading redness or worsening pain, see a physician or surgeon for evaluation and treatment which may include oral antibiotics and/or incision and drainage.

Infection: The redness may be due to cellulitis or skin infection and may require antibiotics. Start by applying topical OTC antibiotic and if it persists or worsens over the next 2-3 days, may need oral antibiotics and take out the foreign body (ring or stud).

See physician: Fusidic acid is bacteriostatic and prone to resistance.  Inflamed ear after piercing with redness and or pus may necessitate an oral antibiotic depending on the severity.  Warm compresses and medical follow up may be warranted.
