day after arriving home from mauritius holiday had ear pain. saw ent and had a clot suctioned out of ear. had no known trauma. what could cause this?

Abrasion: The ear canal skin is extremely thin and sensitive.  Any abrasion with a finger nail of cotton swab (which should never be placed in the ear canal) may cause bleeding.  Outer ear infection or ear drum perforation also may be the etiology.  Rarely skin conditions, lesions or tumors may cause bleeding.

Needs exam: Sometimes old blood drains from the ear canal long after it first formed.  A mild external ear infection could cause some light bleeding.  Either way the ear likely needs to be cleaned out and evaluated.  I would recommend an ent, or your family doctor take a look.

Yes, Congestion can: Prevent one ear from draining w ^pressure. Cold tips: for sore throat – gargle with warm salt water (1/2 tsp salt in 8 oz of water). * for congestion – saline nose drops or a neti pot. *for anti-inflammatory effect ; mobilizing mucus- homemade chicken noodle soup.**for hydration- lots of water. Try clear broth. * add honey ; a small amt. Of lemon juice to chamomile tea.

what should i do if i have a lot of pressure in my head and ear pain while flying?

: Repeated swallowing helps in opening the eustachian tube and avoid ear pain. You could carry lemon drops with you and put one in your mouth when the plane is on the runway. You can stop, once it reaches above 10,000 feet. You should do the same on the way down.

Ear pain: This discomfort may be due to early infection or inflammation of the ear drum. A blockage of the eustachian tube which connects from the ear to the back of the nose is a possibility. See your Physician or an otolaryngologist if symptoms persist.
