Ear infection vs TMJ: Ear infection vs TMJ. See MD, if ear infection may treat with drops or antibiotics. If is TMJ, try soft diet and OTC pain meds. With persistent TMJ symptoms, see TMJ expert. Any dentist can be a TMJ expert with the proper training and experience. Most commonly, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and orofacial pain specialists. Ask your MD, your dentist and your dental society for referrals.

Eustachian tube: Your eustachian tube may be partially blocked leading to a painless/painful pop ; crack when swallowing (similar to sensation when driving up/down mountain or airplane takeoff/landing). It can be aggravated by allergies and/or upper respiratory infections. You may get some relief w/otc antihistamines ; decongestants. If this doesn't help, go see your family doc for possible middle ear infection.

Temporal mandibular: joint dysfunction, or inflammation of the joint where the jaw or mandible is attached to the skull will cause pain with chewing, etc.  This is often caused by clenching the teeth, excessive chewing hard foods, or poor alignment of the teeth.  Take ibuprofen for a few days, stop chewing gum or hard foods.  If it doesn't improve, see your dentist for assessment and possible bite guard for sleeping.

when i chew my right ear hurts (bad pain). it can also happen to my left ear sometimes. the pain only lasts for a day and comes again. is this serious?

TMJ: If chewing leads to ear pain, this is likely due to inflammation in your temporomandibular joint.  The pain you are experiencing in your ear is likely referred pain, from the tm joint.  See your primary care doctor for examination and treatment recommendations.

Your throat pain : Your throat discomfort with yawning indicates local inflammatory tissue in and around your eustacian tube. The discomfort that radiates to your left ear is part of that.

went to urgent care and was prescribed amoxicillin and she finished all the pills. ear hurts worse. she cant chew or open mouth easily. she cant hear well from that ear. pain in worse as well. also has soar throat on same side as ear that is swolle?

See a physician: Please see a physician right away. It may be viral and that is why the antibiotic did not help. Now she may have a secondary bacterial infection. However, if there is anything else that may be causing to continuation of symptoms, she needs to be seen by a physician.

the left side of my jaw is in agony.. i can hardly chew. i don't have a headache/ear pain/ringing. what can i do to get rid of the pain?

1st ENTconsider TMJ: First see an ENT !If the side of your head is tender consider the possibility of a TMJ condition.  The jaw muscles in the face and on the side of the head when fatigued become very tender and cause headaches, tenderness to hand pressure.  Many patients also experience ear pressure, ringing, and ear pain which can be symptoms of a TMJ condition.  For a TMJ specialist visit AACFP.
