It was also believed to be the most likely variant associated with severe illness, however the outbreak in Germany last year of severe STEC was from a different strain, known as 0104:h4.

Meant to be?: Maybe it was not e. Coli at all! generally e. Coli infn, in my experience does not need bladder wash out (dont know what you actually underwent, nor your baseline or your symptoms) but antibiotics. Did you talk to a doctor or a urologist?

E. coli: This organism may often be present on the perineum by colonization with fecal flora.  It may also colonize the vaginal barrel. From the perineum (labia, etc.) to the urethra orifice is easy.  Infections occur with physiological obstructions, or in just susceptible women. This does not happen with men.
