question for dentists:what causes dry mouth all the way round the inner lips,like when you eat acidic citric fruit.had it for 2 months.gums a little sensitive.teeth ok. have tried chlorhexidine 0.04% for 14 days but not much difference.ideas?

Two common reasons: The two most common reasons are #1) a lack of adequate water intake and hydration. # 2) Mouth breathing in late third trimester pregnancy due to the uterus pushing up the diaphragm (breathing muscle) making air intake more difficult. Reason # 2 is solved by improving water intake with reason #1. Finally, chap stick application can avoid lip peeling.

: Have you seen a dermatologist? A dermatologist, or skin doctor, should be able to diagnose the problem and then treat it. It is difficult to know what it is without seeing it so see a dermatologist. Best of luck to you!!

Dry lips: I can not speak for any particular product.  However many products use wax to protect the lips & don't moisturize.   You may want to select a product that contains moisturizers.

what are some causes for extremely dry lips? i've never had this problem and can't think of diet or environmental changes. it happens periodically.

Many things: If we discount environmental changes,  causes may include:  excessive lip licking, medications, age, decreased saliva production (xerostomia), decreased water intake  and dry skin tendencies.  Also the use of drying agents near or around the lips eg alcohol, astringents, acne medications, colognes to name a few could be the culprit. If  lip balms have not helped, see your doctor.

May be lip eczema: Persistent dry bumpy lips can be lip eczema, which may be treated like skin eczema, using hydrocortisone cream (twice a day for 1 week) plus Vaseline or Aquaphor to retain moisture. Sometimes lip balm or lip sunscreen chemicals cause an allergic reaction. Other times, a person is a primary lip-licker (it's her habit). Once cracked, lips get irritated by routine foods and juices. A doctor can help.

Water: Make sure you are drinking plenty of water. Dry chapped lips are a sign that you need more water. You can also apply coconut oil to your lips as a moisturizer. Good luck.
