i have a sinus infection. i have  doxycycline hyclate 100mg. for dosage every 12 hrs.
can i take this?

May not be necessary: Sinus infections are overwhelmingly viral and usually only require supportive care with over the counter medications, nasal steroid spray, or saline nasal spray. Antibiotics are usually only necessary for prolonged symptoms (greater than 2 weeks), severe infections including those with high fever, or if you get better and then sick again.

Check with doctor: Although traditionally a 10-day course for acute sinusitis is prescribed for most abx, it may be ok if you have had complete resolution of your sinus symptoms after 81/2 days of treatment. It is however best to check with your doctor who knows more about your health condition.

In general no: Doxycycline is not generally a good antibiotic for rhino-sinusitis.  If there is objective evidence of a bacterial infection (documented by culture) i would always recommend a culture and sensitivity of the lateral wall of the nose, particularly, is pus is present.  Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) in patients not allergic to penicillin or Levaquin would be my recommendations.  But a culture is required to make sure.

Doxycycline might: cause excessive sweating in 1% of people that take it. So it is rare but possible.

No: You shouldn't breast feed while taking doxycycline. It is considered "possibly unsafe" studies show it does have the potential to be excreted in your breast milk.

Probably OK: Check with the doc who prescribed it, but probably 7 days would be sufficient. You can limit gastrointestinal distress by taking doxycycline with meals, which does not affects the drug's absorption or effectiveness.
