does the pill counteract the implant?

Accepted Answer

No: No, not at all.  The implant will protect you regardless.  The added pill is only there to correct the irregular bleeding.  If your goal is to have no menses, then you might be better off trying the Mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD.

Accepted Answer

Good idea: The implant is much more effective than the pill.  Your provider can insert the implant.  You should continue your pill for one week after you get the implant (or use another form of protection) to prevent pregnancy.

Normaly, yes: Consult the dentist who placed the implant, but three should not be a problem normally

Controversial: There is no one accepted answer but if ths is a short term consideration you may want to stop or even consider transition to another medication that will not have this effect. However some women are pleased with the fullness and prefer to continue the use of the oral contraceptives. I would leave this decision to be made jointly with the surgeon performing the procedure.

Mood swings: Shifts in hormones can lead to mood swings.  After implant placement,  it can take some time for the mood to stabilize. It should. If it becomes a problem for you though at any point, call your doctor to discuss this. People can have very different reactions & experiences that may need to be addressed.

Continue  the pill: It is best to continue the pill until the implant is inserted. The doctor inserting the implant will schedule the procedure according to the pill schedule, usually within 7 days of the active pill. Since appointment and schedules change, it is best to continue until the implant is actually in the arm.

Normal: This is the expected outcome with with implant.  The chances of the periods stopping gets higher the longer you use methods such as pills, DepoProvera and contraceptive implants.  The implant is highly effective at preventing pregnancy, so you are not pregnant.  No need to worry.  Of course the implant does not protect against STDs, so still use condoms or abstinence until marriage.

i would like to go off the pill (jasmin plus) which i started taking at 15ish for my skin. i am in a committed relationship and still need birth control, but i do not take the pill as directed. is the implant a viable alternative?

BCP's vs. implant ?: Contraceptive "implants" are progestin derivatives, and while statistically near oral contraceptives in pregnancy protection, your menses may be very irregular, causing some anxiety if your desire to avoid pregnancy is strong.  Oral bcps, although more "treatment intensive" are more certain and if taken punctually will not result in breakthrough bleeding, and worth the trouble.

Need more info: Your question is best answered by the physician who prescribed the implant because he/she knows your medical history best.
