NO!: The "strep" of "strep throat" is streptococcus pyogenes or Group A strep and if you get it in the back of your throat and it is not treated it sometimes can lead to rheumatic heart disease. Indirectly: Strep throat is generally transmitted through ingesting infected oral secretions such as saliva (from kissing).  Sore throats throats that develop strictly from oral sex alone should prompt an evaluation for a sexually transmitted infection other than Strep.

Hard to guess: Throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor (call first) if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly. COVID-19 infections tend to have cough, whereas strep usually lacks cough but has more throat pain.

Yes, any throat: infection can cause that symptom. How old is your child? Depending on his age, the type of pain described isn't always helpful and certainly not diagnostic. If he has no medical contraindication, I would recommend giving him Tylenol (acetaminophen) for the pain, have him drink cool to lukewarm fluids and see his doctor today or tomorrow. His doctor can examine him, do a strep test if necessary and treat him.

Once the antibiotic is started, the pain usually improves quickly, in 1-2 days. During that time, the pain and fever usually respond to naproxen, Ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Gargling warm salt water or with a prescription combination of benadryl, (diphenhydramine) maalox and Lidocaine helps too. Lozenges may also aid.
