Yes, any throat: infection can cause that symptom. How old is your child? Depending on his age, the type of pain described isn't always helpful and certainly not diagnostic. If he has no medical contraindication, I would recommend giving him Tylenol (acetaminophen) for the pain, have him drink cool to lukewarm fluids and see his doctor today or tomorrow. His doctor can examine him, do a strep test if necessary and treat him.

Yes: Strep throat can cause a burning sensation in the throat. Multiple other conditions, including viruses and gastroesophageal reflux can cause burning. Strep throat often has associated fever, red swollen tonsils and sometimes a fine sand-paper-like rash. If you believe your child has strep throat it would be best to have your child tested to be properly diagnosed and treated.
