Cataract ; dizziness: In general, the eyes don't cause dizziness.  If cataracts are really significant enough to cause a lot of vision loss, then the strain to see things better could cause some lightheadedness.

: No. Astigmatism arises from the shape of the eyeball and how that shape distorts the light reflecting off objects before it touches the retina. Cataracts are just like having foggy glasses, This reduces the quality of the image seen. Cataracts have no effect on the shape of the eye, it all happens inside the lens, disturbing the image quality.

Aging or diabetes: Every year there are a dozen or more patients in my practice with cataracts in their 50's that need surgery. Even though cataracts are more common in older age groups, some people get them at a younger age for unknown reasons.  Diabetics in general get cataracts at an earlier age than the general population.  It is thought that with wide swings in blood sugar that the lens becomes damaged.

Time: Most cataracts are caused by age related degeneration in the proteins in the lens of the eye. This degeneration causes the lens to lose its transparency. Cataract formation can be accelerated by trauma, steroids and other medications, diabetes, smoking, excessive ultraviolet light exposure and some other things. See your eye doctor if you suspect cataracts.
