No periods ?'s: At 21, having two years pass without a menstrual period may be caused by severe stress (job, school or emotional), and hormonal disorders like PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). See your gyn for an exam and testing to be certain of the cause.

Variable: The length of the cycle is varible from 21 to 40 days.   On the average it takes 2 weeks for the estrogen level to build up enough to trigger the body to release the egg.  Once the egg is released it takes 14 days to begin to resuface the lining in everyone.   Some women hit that level of estorgen in 7 and some as long as 28 days.

See your doctor: See your gynecologist specially if bleeding is heavy. An occasional abnormal cycle may happen every now and then. However if the problem is persistent, an evaluation is then needed.

Irregular period: This could just be a normal variation of your cycle. If his has only happened for one month, there is most likely nothing to worry about. However, I would watch your cycle over the next 2-3 mons. If it continues to be irregular, then I would seek further medical advice.

Many options: Irregular periods are one of the most common problems obgyns treat. If this is one time problem it usually resolves on its own. If this is a recurring problem you should be evaluated. Infections &amp;  hormonal changes can cause spotting. If there is a concern for pregnancy then do  a home pregnancy test .  There are many options available to help regulate the menstrual cycle. Schedule a visit.

Not worried.: The most common cause of missed cycles in a young female is pregnancy.  There are many other causes and virtually all of them are benign unless you have other symptoms.  It is quite common for someone of your age to miss periods here and there depending upon stress, diet, weight change, illness, etc. 
Step one:  check home pregnancy test. It should be very positive if you are pregnant.

NSAIDs: Starting ibuprofen or naproxen they day before your period starts can help decrease your cramps as can contraceptives such as pills, patches, and rings. DepoProvera and IUDs like Mirena (levonorgestrel) and Skyla can make your periods lighter or even nonexistent as well as helping with the cramping, hope this helps.
