Check with doctor...: A person on heart meds can check with his primary care doctor and/or his cardiologist about using featherweight baking powder, which states that it is sodium free, but does have some potassium in it. Its website says 1/8 teaspoon of it has 70mg of potassium, so a patient can ask his doctor if that's ok.

Negatively : Excess salt causes your blood pressure to go up, this puts more strain on your heart.  Your body will retain extra water to help wash the salt out. This causes extra strain on your heart and blood vessels.

Indirect via fluid: Increased intake of salt results in increased salt in the blood vessels. As a result, water tends to follow the salt. The net effect is higher volume in the blood. This can increase blood pressure which is a risk factor for heart disease.
  If a person has underlying heart failure, a higher intravascular volume can exacerbate symptomatic heart failure which may require hospitalization.
