Listen to PCP.: The treatment will depend on what caused the gastroenteritis. I would think the butter milk fast could make it worse. For gastroenteritis regardless of what caused it, a bland diet would be preferable without milk products as you treat the diarrhea and electrolyte imbalance .  Pcp can also order c.Diff test.

Probably a myth: My patients who normally have no problems drinking milk, haven't confirmed getting thicker mucus or getting more mucus when they are ill with colds, coughs, or asthma, JUST BECAUSE they drank milk or ate other dairy foods while they were ill. Maybe it happens to a few people out there... but I haven't noticed it. Realize that the amount of mucus changes anyway, during the course of one's illness.

No: Neither rice nor milk causes phlegm.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.

i have been coughing up phlegm? i think that is about the size of a piece of rice and more solidified than mucus. almost like a gelatin substance

Mgt: You may have bronchitis, most are caused by a viral illness. Monitor your temperature, drink fluids and get plenty of rest.

Milk and phlegm: It is an old wive's tale.    Someone with post nasal drip can eat whatever they like  - eating certain foods won't help or hurt nasal congestion or a runny nose though warm fluids ie soup, tea etc will have a soothing effect.  Chocolate isn't bad either.

Maybe: There is no current research to indicate this is true. Many people believe that consuming dairy can promote mucus production and subsequently worsen congestion. Regardless, if consuming dairy makes you feel like you have thicker mucus then avoid during the common cold.

after eating cereal, i had a lot of mucus or phlegm ,and it makes me feel tired. what food can i  substitute for cereal and milk for my breakfast?

Lots of options!: There are countless healthier options then cereal in the morning.  First, any food can be eaten at any time of the day BUT if you are looking for something more "traditionally" breakfast food consider - fruit, toast, eggs, oatmeal, yogurt, cottage cheese, whole grain waffle with fruit spread, etc. You may also want to try almond milk instead of cow's milk.  Have fun with variety :)

Prednisone : Try giving child something frozen to freeze taste buds or give small amounts of medication at a time. Call your doctor if your child still can't tolerate it
