Try to relax!: It's still fairly early to be worried. Most patients with marginal placentas deliver vaginally without incident. If this is your first pregnancy your lower uterine segment will not soften until fairly close to term so the placenta may appear to be low until fairly late. As long as there isn't significant vaginal bleeding you shouldn't worry.

In placenta previa,: the placenta either partially or completely overlaps the opening of the cervix.  As the cervix starts to dilate, the blood vessels of the placenta are exposed and start to bleed, and if the bleeding doesn't stop or is very heavy, the baby needs to be delivered immediately or may not survive due to blood loss.  The cervix softens several weeks before  due date, so important to monitor carefully.

Possible: One of the more common causes of preterm premature rupture of membranes is infection, such as chorioamnionitis (infection of the placenta).

Placenta previa: The chance of early labor may increase with placenta previa if you have a bleed lifting up a portion of the placenta. There are several forms of placenta previa depending upon the percentage of the opening of the womb is covered by the placenta. In fact, what appears early in pregnancy to be a complete previa may change in time as the uterus increases in size. C section is common for delivery.

if ive had two pregnancies the first my placenta began to fail at 29 weeks & was born at 37 weeks and my second was born at 32 weeks, would having another child increase the chances of preterm labor and more medical problems?

: All women with this history are considered a high risk pregnancy from the onset. Many would recommend referral to a perinatologist at the beginning of any subsequent pregnancy for that reason. It is possible a normal pregnancy could occur, but it would not be the initial expectation.

why does placenta previa cause cramping and bleeding?

Accepted Answer

Bleeding: Placenta previa is the placenta implanting over the internal opening of the cervix, and is a very serious problem.  It will necessitate you having a caesarean section, as you will not be able to have a vaginal birth.  As to bleeding, it can be very serious, and should be reported to your doctor immediately.

can marginal placenta previa cause placental abruption? what are the statistics on marginal previa moving after 20 weeks?

Cervix and placenta: Will move apart
as a balloon expands, (uterus), points on the balloon move apart, this will likely occur as the uterus grows, if no bleeding, little risk of harm. Ask your doctor to be sure. 
Previa can create a type of partial abruption, along the edge of the attachment.

can placenta previa (abrupto @34wk but wasnt seen til 36w) cause postpartum issues? excessive irregular bleeding, pelvic sensitivity?  i am 7month pp

Should not: Causes issues with pregnancy, labor and delivery but 7 months later should not be an issue.

MFM evaluation: Consider asking for a referral to a maternal fetal medicine specialist. Your situation sounds quite high risk especially when you use phrases like massive bleeding. Your doctor may want to consider keeping you in the hospital now that the baby has reached viability.  The chances of previa resolution will vary depending on the exact location and will vary from person to person
