Sometimes: Eyes that look red (so-called "pink-eye") can be due to many things including bacterial and viral  infections, allergies, inflammations, etc. Typically allergic conjunctivitis produces itch. Itching is occasionally noted with bacterial and viral conjunctivitis as well, but less commonly. Blepharitis can produce itching on the lid margins.

The : The most common reason that i treat patients for itchy/irritated/red eyes is dry eye syndrome.  The most common reason for dry eyes is a condition called blepharitis, which is eyelid inflammation from blocked oil glands in the eyelids.  The blockage allows bacteria to grow which release toxins and the chronic inflammatory state that ensues causes poor tear production...Thus the dry eyes.  These symptoms are worse at night and worse when you blink less (like reading books, computer, or watching tv).  You might even find crusty sand-like debris in your eyelashes when you wake up in the morning.

The fix is simple.  Take a warm washcloth and massage your eyelids with them closed for about 5 minutes.  Do this before and after bedtime.  If you're having a lot of symptoms then add a lunch and snacktime routine.  This fixes the oil gland blockage problem and reduces inflammation.  When you're eyes are red, itchy, or blurry, use some lubricating drops.  Avoid the drops that "get the red out" because they can be irritating over time.  Instead use "natural" tears or the ones that have "no preservatives."  use them every couple of hours as needed for relief.

Could be: Your description could very well be "pink eye, " a.K.A. Viral conjunctivitis. It could also be a bacterial infection or even a contact allergy. I would recommend seeing an ophthalmologist to be sure. They each require different treatment.

Cool compresses!: When one mechanically rubs the eyes, it stimulates significant allergic reaction.  Cool compresses help with alleviating that!

Yes and no: Pink eye is caused by a virus that runs a typical course of a few weeks.  There is no cure for pink eye but time.  Antibiotics do not work.  Touching your eyes will transfer the infective virus to other people and surface where it can reinfect you and other people.  Hand washing and using tissues (then immediately throwing them out) is essential.

Yes: Pink eye is just an eye that is pink for any reason.  Pink eye could be an infection, in which case there is often pus.  (this kind is contagious.) it may be allergy in which case it is usually itchy.  (not contagious) it may be trauma in which case there is often pain.  It may be irritation in which case there may be pus, itching and/or pain.

Possible Pink eye: If it is has been occurring for a while it may be blepharoconjunctivitis.  Classic pink eye is viral in origin and contagious.  You should see you eye md to diagnosis and treat.

Alllergic: Both viral and allergic conjunctivitis have similar symptoms except itch happens with allergic conjunctivitis.  The viral one is contagious and correlates  with the a upper respiratory viral infection during or after recovery.   Artificial tears and Cold compressors help with the symptoms.

Maybe/not: You could have also got a foreign object/chemicals/soap or pollen in the site which can produce similar symptoms. You can flood the area with artificial tears &amp; sometimes lessen the symptoms. If they persist you may need to have someone examine the area.
