Depends: Food poisoning is due to many causes, like chemical contamination, biological toxins and infection. Pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) may provide symptomatic relief but will not address the underlying cause.

i think its possible i might have food poisoning. but i don't think anything i ate can go bad. would it be ok if i took pepto bismol or tums (calcium carbonate)?

Go ahead!: Why do you think you have food poisoning? What symptoms do you have? Taking pepto or Tums (calcium carbonate) will not do any harm but if you have no symptoms, why do you want to take these medications. It is not a good idea to take any medication, unless it is needed.

Food poisoning : Since last Friday after eating seafood it is probably a food poisoning. If you have diarrhea that suggest food poisoning since you do not get diarrhea with gastritis. If there is blood in a loose stool you need a culture from the stool. Food poisoning goes away on its own  within days to weeks. See your doctor for an evaluation.

It's controversial. : It used to be thought it was better to let your system 'cleanse itself ' without medication, but studies have shown this to not be true. Pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) can help decrease vomiting, diarrhea, & cramping in some. Please take only as directed & avoid if you are allergic to aspirin. Stay hydrated! simple 'food poisoning' should resolve within 24-48 hrs. If not better by then, or bleeding, see a doc.

Yes...: Acute food poisoning symptoms might take up to 72 hours to resolve.  There is no contraindication to taking peptobismol but be aware it might turn your feces black.  Good luck!

Pepto Bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) does: Cause black stools (& sometimes, even a black tongue). 'food poisoning' should end in about 24-72 hrs. If your stools remain black in a week, or if your symptoms persist, you should see your doctor.

Salicylate: It may, because it contains a locally acting anti-inflammatory related to aspirin: bismuth sub-salicylate.  You should be aware of the aspirin-like qualities and not use it as you would an antacid, because the salicylate can also cause ulcers and bleeding.  It is best used for diarrhea or gastroenteritis.

Sure, no harm there.: If it's food related there may be associated diarrhea, and will be limited to 12-18 hrs. Try to stay hydrated. Either way it should be self limited.  Of course, if symptoms worsen or persist more than 2-3 days, i suggest you contact your provider. Good luck.

No: Both pepto bishop and alka seltzer contain aspirin which could be toxic. Use the Omeprazole with 1 or the other. Take the correct dose. All the best!

Before.: One hour to 30m before, so it can protect your stomach. Diluted out after a meal.
