Depends: The actual cause of the pneumonia (particular organism involved), extent of disease, the prior health and immunity of the patient, age and other factors will dictate how  long it may take to resolve.

Yes: In general, the pleural (lining of the lungs) may become inflammed or infected with a pneumonia. The fluid that is part of the normal lubrication of the lungs may collect abnormally -- which is called an effusion. Once it is resorbed, residual pain and discomfort may be experienced for several weeks to months after the event.

Mgt: If the effusion is associated with symptoms such as fever or is tap able, fluid can be sent for cytopathology. A TB test is also indicated.

Yes: Pneumonia is a lung infection with a virus, bacteria or less commonly a fungus.  It is typically treated with antibiotics to eradicate the cause, which often is bacterial in origin.  Pleurisy is inflammation of the covering of the lung and inner lining of the chest cavity and is treated with anti-inflammation medications.

Not the same: Pneumonia is inflammation, usually infection related, in the lung itself.  Pleurisy, inflammation of the lining of the lung (the pleura) can be associated with pneumonia but can be an isolated process.

It's possible: Pleurisy is pain in the chest from irritation of the lining of the lung as it rubs against the inside of the chest wall. Pneumonia is an infecton in the substance of the lung. Since most lung infections come from germs we inhale, pneumonia usually comes first and pleurisy is later. Depending on what germ is causing the problem, pleurisy might occasionally happen first, but it's not very likely.

Pneumonia & Pleurisy: Pneumonia is usually a severe infection to either bacteria or virus. Pleurisy is usually a secondary illness or consequence of a lung infection.  There are so many different scenarios with both that I am not sure how to answer the rest of your question. Neither of them are good to have. And, both require some treatment.

No: Treatment for pneumonia usually includes antibiotics and cough medication.  Pleurisy tends to be caused by viruses and anti inflammatory medications are the main treatments rather than antibiotics.

Hard to tell: If you feel well otherwise (no fever, cough , or breathing problem), this is likely from inflammation on the chest cage.  Is the pain relieved by ice pack, heating pad, or NSAID?  If the pain is severe, you will need to see your doctor.

i was diagnosed with pneumonia and pleurisy 3 weeks ago.  i still have minor pains in my chest & shortness of breath.  is it normal to last this long?

sometimes: I agree  that's a long time. Have you stopped smoking 100% to allow full healing of your lungs and respiratory tract? Has fever resolved? Is your cough improved? If the answer to all 3 questions is "yes" - i'd give it more time. Otherwise, go back to your treating doc for another look.  And please don't smoke anymore!
