Yes, most likely: Sleep study is observing your natural, physiologic parameters during sleep to document whether there are any breathing pauses (apneic episodes) present that can lead to temporary drop of oxygen content in your blood. They can  be related to such problems as high blood pressure or coronary artery disease.

UARS: In patients that snore and have frequent awakenings with nonrestorative sleep, the diagnosis is often uars (upper airway resistance syndrome) which is in the similar spectrum to apnea.  Often devices such as snore guards (one such is snore rx) and treating nasal congestion (theraventsnoring, breathright, nasal sprays) can be helpful. CPAP and PVCs: Hi Derrick, there is data that demonstrates that CPAP usage does decrease the number of PVCs, but this was only in patients diagnosed with heart failure.  Keep in mind that regular CPAP usage should improve any current symptoms related to sleep apnea such as day time fatigue and will also prevent long term complications such as pulmonary hypertension. No: Questionaires are not very sensitive. The only sure way to know is an overnight psg (sleep stuyd). This can be done in the lab or at home. More and more insurance companies are moving towards in-home sleep studies in suspected apnea patients without significant illnesses like heart failure.

Sleep study: Sleep studies are done for diagnostic purposes. So, if you have a positive sleep study if would be the objective evidence to warrant treatment for apnea, typically obstructive, which typically is some type of CPAP device.  If symptoms not improving sleep sudies can be done to determine efficacy or compliance.

Yes: The gold standard is a overnight sleep study in a lab. There are now approved home study devices that are approved for use. They do not collect as much information as a formal study in the lab, but can be used as a screening method and for those patients that can not spend the night in the lab for various reasons.

Overnight test: Most sleep studies are done at a sleep laboratory.  You will show up and they will hook up a bunch of different monitors on you.  Then, you are supposed to sleep and they will measure many things about your sleep.  They may fit you with a CPAP if you have obstructive sleep apnea.

Accepted Answer

No: An important feature of  sleep apnea are arousals, especially associated with a decrease in the blood oxygen content.  The arousals lighten your sleep but not enough for you to become aware of waking up.  The technicians may awaken you if the apnea or decreased oxygen is very severe.

what do you suggest if my husband had a sleep study done last night to determine if he has sleep apnea?

Get the results: Hi. I would suggest nothing without the results of the sleep study! Is he obese? Regardless of sleep study results, we can recommend healthy lifestyle with healthy diet, regular exercise, and no smoking. If he has sleep apnea, they will recommend auto-PAP or whatever CPAP they're using, if indicated. Good luck to him!

i am doing a sleep study next week.  if it is found that i have sleep apnea, will i start feeling better?

Accepted Answer

Yes: There is a good chance that you will feel more awake and alert, and if you have been feeling depressed that could improve as well. In many people it occurs immediately, but in some it can take up to two months to reach maximum benefit if you are compliant with your cpap. Best wishes.
