Not both: Metronidazole will often cure BV (bacterial vaginosis).  It is ineffective against chlamydia.  For this you will need a different antibiotic, such as azithromycin, doxycycline, eryhromycin, or uncommonly Levofloxacin and ofloxacin.  See your clinician for an appropriate prescription.

Another antibiotic.: Metronidazole is not the only antibiotic that works for BV, it's the most commonly used.  Talk to your doctor.  He might have a better solution that will help you out.

Accepted Answer

Possible: The usual treatment for BV is metronidazole 500 mg twice daily for seven days - but a single 2 gram dose can also be effective.  The cure rate would be a bit better by repeating the 2 gram dose.

If the seven day treatment did not work at all - it may not be BV.

: If your doctor prescribed your metronidazole over seven days, do not try to change the prescription or take it in any different way. It was prescribed in that matter for a reason. Good luck.

Flagyl: I notice you are jaundiced, has a protozoan infection been ruled out, such as Entameba hidtolytica. This protozoan can cause liver abscesses which in turn can cause jaundice. As such you might want to consult a liver specialist. This could be a reason that the drug is not working. On rare occasions Flagyl can cause jaundice

I prefer gel: The gel works well and, in my experience, has fewer side-effects so it is what I prefer.

Accepted Answer

Resistant bv: I believe that you should see your gyn for this.  The bacteria can be cultured and sensitivities checked with a large number of antibiotics.  You should take the one or two that your infection is sensitive to and take the full course so the infection is totally eradicated.

: You can try one of these approaches or a combination: suppression Tx with metronidazole gel 7.5%, 5-gram dose, twice a week for 4-6 months or boric acid vaginal suppository every night x 1 month or/and sex abstinence vs partner with condom use . Suppression therapy or boric acid suppository should be started after 1 week of induction therapy with standard dose of oral metronidazole or tinidazole.

BV cure: Generally Metronidazole is effective for BV assuming it was BV in the first place.    And 5 days worth should have taken care of the problem.    Just be careful with Metronidazole and alcohol consumption - some patients experience a nasty side effect of nausea and vomiting.

i had sex on day 1(before metronidazole gel) and day 2 before gel. i have 5 day treatment. i stopped until i complete. will bv cure or did i mess up ?

Yes: To really get the problem under control you and your partner need to be treated SIMULTANEOUSLY since you can give the infection to him/her and keep it going back and forth. Males need the ORAL medication (See Precautions re: alcohol consumption.. and the female COMPLETE a COURSE of the gel......Hope this helps!
