Need cervical change: The mucus plug is not a sign of labor.  It can be lost right before delivery or several weeks before delivery.  The mucus plug is inside the cervical opening to prevent bacteria or debris from ascending the cervical canal.  Signs of labor are when you have cervical change ( example going from 2 cm to 4 cm), along with regular contractions ( example- Contractions every 5 min apart lasting a min)

Soon...maybe: Usually within 2 days is what we're taught... After doing this for over 20 years, i've learned that the wait can be much longer. If it's truly a mucous plug from cervical change & with increasing contractions; you may deliver within the week. But, remember, your baby hasn't read the same books & will come when it's ready! ;).

About to deliver: A pregnant woman's mucus plug is expelled just prior to delivery.  It is present to help block bacteria from entering the uterus during pregnancy.  Sometimes, loss of a mucus plug can be associated with some bloody discharge.  If you are the one who is pregnant, you may want to let your OB know.  Good luck!

Contractions: However, many things are involved, and most contractions can be subtle enough that many women may not feel them.  .Also, passing your mucus plug does not "guarantee" labor will follow in the next 12-24 hours.  For many women, labor may be up to 1-2 weeks later.

Yes: The mucus plug is not a very reliable indicator of cervical dilation.  Not every women knows when it comes out.  Its easy to miss.  So it is possible to dilate and efface without seeing the mucus plug.  Best wishes!

Please ask your OB: All ?S like this esp at the end of your pregnancy should be directed to your OB as your OB knows your situation and that is part of their job to answer all ?S u have, it could happen soon or never happen, losing your plug does not correlate with rupture of membranes, my advise to you is don't go past your due date 39-40 wks is the ideal time to deliver for the baby, i induce everyone by 40 wks.
