Constipation ?: Formula fed babies usually have a predictable pattern of daily stools. Babies have weak belly muscles &amp; strain using their breathing muscle to assist pooping. They often make noise &amp; their belly gets hard in the process. If it is soft when they go it is not constipation. If hard you can use full strength prune juice 1oz 1-3X/d spaced out which loosens in a few days.

my 1 month old baby is on nevirapine so i had stopped breastfeeding and started giving lactogen because i was not producing enough. however he has been having constipation ever since i started giving him lactogen. what can i do?

: If your baby is on Nevirapine because of HIV infection do not breasfeed is important so the virus would not be transmitted to the baby by you if it did not happen prior. I do not know what your understanding of constipation however as long as the baby is feeding well what you could do is give some water that was boiled and cooled in between feeds. If the mother does not have HIV let mother drink.

Define constipation : Infants that age often struggle with feeds &amp; pooping. Their weak belly muscles often need assistance of their fussing/breathing muscles to move food along or poop. If it is soft when they go it is normal. If they pass hard rabbit pellets you can add full strength prune juice, 1 oz 1-3X/d spaced out. The sugar in this juice is not absorbed well &amp; acts as a laxative.

Formula: Many different formulas are produced, but at 17 months, a focus on "people food" should take precedence.  Increasing fiber with fruits, vegetables and legumes in tablespoon quantities may well help you with constipation issues.

Fussy is whatever baby feels pissy about often fatigue.
