No.: Most thyroid nodules are benign.  However, there are various imaging/clinical features that help determine the probability that a particular nodule might be malignant, and therefore require a biopsy for definitive diagnosis, so more information is needed to make an assessment.  Talk to your doc about the results.

Thyroid nodules: Yes, that is true.  Sometimes a nuclear thyroid scan is helpful to determine hot (benign) nodules vs cold (sometimes malignant) nodules. I'm sure you can request that test for clarity.

Likely benign: Cystic hypoechoic nodule is usually benign particularly without solid components.However some malignant tumors have cystic components. 0.2mm growth in 11/2 years is slow growth.Most malignant tumors grow faster. Most nodules less than 1 cm are not biopsied. Most small nodules are usually benign. You are correct in getting follow up US exams.  Hyperechoic lesions are denser sometimes with calcium.

It is usually benign: The risk for a thyroid nodule to be cancerous actually is only 5-6%- and majority of thyroid nodule is benign.
Having said that, the risk of developing thyroid cancer will be higher if you have significant risk like previous exposure to radiation to the neck area at early age ( childhood), family history of thyroid cancer etc. 
You need to continue to f/u with your doctor and  sono as indicated.

Not known: Thyroid nodules can easily be biopsied by a competent ear, nose and throat doctor in the office.
Most are benign but with every lump, you never can predict until you get the fine needle biopsy back from pathology with the results.
Thyroid cancer is the fastest growing cancer in the US currently due to cell phone radiation, cell towers.  Radiation is known to cause these along with genetics.

Yeah some: wife had biopsy for this this week. Chance is low but that warrants a biopsy.

Yes, some: You need to see an endocrinologist.. Who would likely do a fine needle aspiration(fna) biopsy. Thyroid cancer needs to be ruled out by further testing. It has to be a consideration in your case. But thyroid cancer is easily treatable and highly curable(>95%).

Unlikely but ask doc: Most of the the thyroid nodules are benign, cystic nodules are even more benign, but sometimes a small focus of cancer could be inside the cyst, to be sure most of the time after fine needle aspiration (fna) will be done by your doctor  send for biopsy ( cytology ) to be sure it is benign..

Possibly: Each thyroid nodule has an approx. 5% chance of malignancy, thus a heterogenous could be cancerous.  Looking at it the other way, a heterogenous nodule has a 95% chance of not being cancerous.
