i read an article that refers to a study that concluded that taking benzodiazepines can increase the possibility of having alzheimers. is it true?

Accepted Answer

Possibly: A few years ago there was a study indicating that those over the age of 65 who begin taking Benzodiazepines have a 50% greater chance of having dementia.  It was not determined if this was causative or just a correlation.  It may be that these individuals are taking Benzodiazepines to off set the early symptoms of dementia.

how would i know if my memory and expressive difficulties are more than stress related, and what can i do to rule out alzheimer? i am concerned about frequent short term memory deficit and increased difficulty trying to express myself. examples: thinking

Depression : Depression and dementia have a large number of overlapping symptoms making it sometimes difficult to distinguish between the two.  A primary care provider can assess these problems with questionnaires designed to screen for each, and can also order lab tests for conditions that can mimic dementia and depression.  A referral for neuropsychological testing, and new imaging techniques that allow visualization of Alzheimer's lesions in the brain (i.e. A pet scan using pittsburgh compound b), could be considered for "tough" cases.

Lack of awarenss: It's actually recognized more do to better understanding now.  It really hasn't increased in incidence.

i have had anxiety and stress for most of my life. (i'm 38) do i have an increased chance of alzheimer's or dementia when i get older?

Accepted Answer

I don't think so: I have never heard of any increased risk in the anxiety disorder population. But it is certainly a good idea to work on reducing your anxiety symptoms now so that you reduce all the other physical illnesses that are very associated with a life of stress and anxiety. Psychotherapy does work and there are medications that some people find helpful. Get help so that you live a long good life.

40 y.o female with a gradual increase in memory loss. forgetting things mid-sentence, why i went to a room in the house, etc. it's getting worse. am i too young for alzheimer's or what else could it be?

: Even in older patients, we invariably look for reversible causes of memory loss.  Among the many problems: are sleep disorders, medication or recreational drug side effects, thyroid problems, chronic infections, vitamin deficiency, depression, and genetic disorders.  Would certainly be of value to see an experienced neurologist and evaluate your situation.

Haven't seen either: Article are written many ways  and you need to see the article  to clarify it. They may have  looked  at  different groups,  may have  assumes the wrong information, put in misinformation, used different  statistical models etc. An in depth analysis may explain this

my grandfather is 84 and his doctor said he is showing early signs of alzheimer's disease.i do have add and anxiety since teens. does this greatly increase my chance with early alzheimer's disease?

Probably not: While some cases of alzheimer's are hereditary, most are not.  So far, we haven't found any connection between add or anxiety increasing the risk for ad.  Exercise and a diet rich in vegetables seems to ward of ad somewhat.  Using your brain is important, too.  Read, work puzzles or take classes to keep your mind active.

what increases the euphoria of hydrocodone?

Accepted Answer

Why is that?: Are you looking to abuse it?  Hydrocodone is an excellent pain medication, potentiated by tylenol (acetaminophen).  The euphoria it can generate has no medical benefit that I am aware of.

can taking loperamide increase the effects of hydrocodone?

Accepted Answer

Not really: Both will slow down your bowels, possibly causing constipation, but loperamide will not make the effects of hydrocodone (in terms of pain relief) any stronger.

can you tell me if on hydrocodone 5/500 for 7 years before asking for dose increase.. is the hydrocodone 5/325 weaker med ?

Less tylenol (acetaminophen): Because of an increased prevalence of tylenol overdoses and numbers of people with tylenol-induced liver problems, the FDA ruled that no acetaminophen-containing combination can have more than 325 mg. Pills with more than 325 mg will not be available in the near future. Talk to your doctor about your tylenol dose - it should not be more than 2000 mg a day in general.Opioids should never be only RX
