if drinking alcohol is so bad, why isn't it illegal?

: They tried that ....called prohibition...led to the growth of organized crime. If drinking toxic substances is your thing do so in moderation. People are free to do all sorts of things that are self destructive. When you do so to the detriment others (drive drunk) they can toss you under the jail for vehicular homicide. Most do not go that far, but a lot kill off their livers.

This is not a good: Thing. If you believe that you have lost control over your use of alcohol - that is a red flag. It you have tried to cut down on use or to quit unsuccessfully - that is another flag. If your used is negatively impacting your life - pay attention. Alcoholics anonymous is a free, confidential forum to deal with addiction. You could also see an addiction medicine specialist or addiction psychiatrist.

aside from driving, what shouldn't you do while drinking alcohol?

A partial list: Some mean no alcohol, some allow for a moderate amount: flying, boating, biking, motorcycling, air traffic controlling, surgery, handling firearems, skilled athletics, medical procedures, taking other medications, performing, working on the job. Anything for which you want full confidence that you are thinking your best and maximizing balance and motor tasks.

how come drinking a lot of water after drinking alcohol doesn't help it to get out of your system faster?

Alcohol and water: Drinking waters merely dilutes the alcohol in the stomach. Its the liver that clears the alcohol and this is not dependent on the dilution.

i'd like to start drinking alcohol for health reasons, but really don't crave it. what to do?

Then don't: As we continue to figure out what the true health benefits vs risks alcohol has on the human body, I am not currently recommending to my patients who do not drink, that they start drinking. However, if you already drink 1-2 drinks a day, there seems to be good evidence that it is beneficial.  Thus, I do not make them stop.  But don't start, especially at 33.  Too much time to develop an addiction.

There is...: ...Certainly a high risk of that, if your drinking is heavy enough or if there is an underlying liver disease.

No: In moderation it won't hurt but wont help.  A heavy drinker will skip important nutrients and that would be detrimental to healing.

Alcohol toxicity: Alcohol is toxic to every organ in the body.  The added risk is developing alcoholism.

Lots of empty: Sugar calories. If you were dieting would you eat lots of twinkies, ho ho's, ice cream & cake? It wouldn't be a very succesfull diet if you did. The same goes for alcohol.
