Inconsistent: Blood banks monitor the hemoglobin level of donor blood and would not collect blood from a potential donor with low hemoglobin. So the patient did not receive blood with low iron. However, if the patient is anemic due to iron deficiency s/he should take after consultation with the doctor.

Anemia: Is 10.5 your hemoglobin level? Either way whether this is your hemoglobin level or your iron (ferritin) level. The level is low and indicates that you are anemic. If you do have iron deficiency and you  dont respond to oral iron then you probably should get intravenous iron. Discuss firther with your md. Make sure that you dont have any other reason that can make you anemic besides low iron.

What units?: If this was measured in micrograms per deciliter, you are very low, probably iron deficient, and need to address why -- this may be from monthly loss, loss from pregnancy, vegetarianism, blood loss from hookworm or a GI ulcer or malignancy, or some other cause. Your physician needs to address this with you.

Excess Menstrual : Iron levels alone are unreliable. We would like to know your , CBC ( hemoglobin or hematocrit), tibc, and your ferritin to have a better understanding of your iron metabolism. Many ladies have chronic anemia and low iron because of heavy menstrual periods. Depending upon your age you may or may not have uterine polyps, fibroids or other reason to bleed too much.

: The iron level fluctuates and clinically it is not meaningful by itself. In order to detect iron deficiency or iron toxicity, besides a simple iron level, the whole iron panel which should include TIBC (iron saturation or TSAT is calculated from iron level and TIBC) and ferritin level, needs to be done.

Why?: Women are often iron deficient during reproductive years. How do you know you have excess iron? What is your serum iron and ferritin level? You may not need to reduce you iron. It would be prudent to consult a doctor as it is not a do it yourself issue.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex. 
Get HPV vaccine.

hello.  my husband just got his blood work back and his iron level was slightly elevated at 169 ug/dl. is this bad & what is the significance of it?

Elevated iron: This should be followed up by a ferritin test.There is a genetic disorder of iron overload, hemochromatosis, that should be ruled out.See your doctor.
