Tried dayquil and it doesn't do anything. can anyone give me any home remedies for a sore throat or whatever i have?

For significant sore throat with swollen tonsils / lymph nodes –  see physician & get a strep throat test / culture. Consider tylenol (acetaminophen) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications.
Saltwater gargles: mix 1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water – gargle several times a day. Or gargle with aloe vera juice twice a day.  Add honey & a small amt. Of lemon juice to chamomile tea.

I have a sore throat but i don't have anything else but dayquil right now and i wanna know if is bad to drink some at night?

Do not take more then the recommended dosage, otherwise this is fine. The big difference between dayquil and nyquil is that nyquil has extra ingredients to make you sleepy. You should not take nyquil during the day unless you plan to spend the day in bed.

I had five or six drinks last night, ending around 2am. it's now 11am and i woke up congested with a sore throat. would it be okay to take dayquil?

The major concern with medications like DayQuil or Nightquil would be drowsiness. I certainly would not drink further while on Dayquil or any other over the counter cold medications since reactions may differ with alcohol.  However, I see no other major issues at this point. Stay well hydrated.

I took 2 dayquil severe for a sore throat and cold and i am taking citalopram 40 mg.  is this ok or should i stop and if so what would be better?

One of the ingredients in Dayquil can accelerate the heart rhythm and there is a slight chance of harmful reaction with citalopram which can rarely cause the serotonin syndrome. I would avoid dayquil and cough syrups while on citalopram. Your pharmacist can give you a lot of help with this and any questions about your medications. For your sore throat gargle with warm saltwater, and take Tylenol

Is it true that if you take dayquil for symptom management if you have a cold (pn drip/sore throat/cough) that the cold may take longer to go away?

I would treat symptoms if improves the patient feeling better.Sometimes if you suppress a cough you may not clear secretions as much but if does significantly make you feel better and causes no other harm such as increasing blood pressure then I would treat it.It will likely not increase the duration of the illness that significantly.

This sounds like the flu. No over the counter medications will get rid of the flu, cold, or a bacterial sinus/throat/lung infection. They do help with easing the symptoms though. Any of them are good for that. Chloraseptic spray is good for the throat. And you're too late for tamiflu (oseltamivir) which can shorten the duration a little. Generally, you just have to deal with it. Flu lasts 10-14 days usually.

No you shouldn't worry if you follow the instructions you are safely using the product. If your still concerned go see your doc :)

Accepted Answer

It is safe to take Allegra if you have already taken dayquil which contains tylenol, (acetaminophen) dextromethorphan and a decongestant. Do not take nyquil which contains an antihistamine.

Started fridat with sore throat and no voice now coughing every minute and mucus. cough syrup/dayquil/benadryl isn't helping. why?  what to do?

Probably a virus  a common cold.  Drink fluids and rest. Yellow or greenish drainage with a fever, think bacterial infection that needs an antibiotic. See your internist or family doctor if persistent  over the next week. Hang in there.

to the OTC cold medicines mentioned. Whether they work or not is another issue. I find that inhaling warm steam for a few minutes 2x daily for 3 days may help hasten recovery.
