2-3% of liveborns.: 2-3% of all liveborns will have a minor or major anatomical defect. This risk increases with advancing parental age (mostly maternal), maternal obesity, pre-pregnancy diabetes mellitus and teratogen exposure prior to conception. Folic acid (4-5 mg daily) if taken during the months leading up to the conception decreases major brain/spine and heart anomalies significantly so it is highly recommended.

If a kid has six fingers on each hand, it will be evident at birth, its origin a genetic trait. If a child has a cleft palate, many factors are involved. If several fingers or toes are lost, the origin is likely amnionic bands, an injury during pregnancy.
