Present at birth: Congenital means present at birth. It is a broad term with no real statement of origin. If a kid has six fingers on each hand, it will be evident at birth, its origin a genetic trait. If a child has a cleft palate, many factors are involved. If several fingers or toes are lost, the origin is likely amnionic bands, an injury during pregnancy.

Congenital abnormali: Congenital means you were born with the abnormailty. It was not aquired as an illness it was there all the time (since birth).

Slightly higher risk: There is a link between paternal age and some birth defects but the overall risk is low. The current scientific explanation is that DNA changes occur more frequently in sperm as men ages. The risk is low and increases with the age of the man.
