wondering what can cause rise in blood glucose while intermittent fasting, i had recent lab work that included a1c of 5.5. i have heard the fasting can cause a glucose rise from falling insulin levels and increase urine output (water loss). accurate?

: I am not sure where you get all those information but I have never heard off. There is one thing called "dawn phenomenon" when glucose is low enough in a treated diabetic patient triggers a spike in all hormones which have the opposite effect of Insulin and cause a spike on blood glucose so the glycemia is still normal &amp; it could mask the previous episode of low blood sugar. Your HbA1C is good.

Insulin resistance.: High blood sugar will cause Insulin levels to rise, but i suspect you are referring to Insulin resistance.  This is a phenomena in which your muscle cells have reduced sensitivity to insulin. This results in higher blood levels of Insulin for any given level of blood sugar as compared to those without Insulin resistance.

Insulin: High endogenous insulin levels may be due to an insulin secreting tumor or spikes in blood sugar, but I don't think that exertion raises the insulin levels unless blood sugar rises. However if you have had problems with low blood sugar after exercise,consult an endocrinologist for evaluation and advice.

Insulinoma: Insulin is the only hormone that brings your blood sugar down.  Your Insulin levels should be very low if your blood sugar is low.  If you have low blood sugar and a high Insulin level, then you have something that is producing Insulin abnormally.  Ask your doctor to explain!

Metabolic disorder: Metabolic disorders like this sounds are very difficult to diagnose and get exact resons for.  Many times the reason won't show up on routine blood work, and you need to do things like biopsies of muslcle, etc, to pin down the cause. Sounds like a possible mitochondrial disorder where she can't metabolize her glucose correctly, but other possibilities also exist. Get to a metabolic specialist!

is onglyza 5mg  a better product to use than glucophage 1000mg for controlling high insulin levels?

can onglyza 5mg cause anxiety as a side effect?

Typical add on: Onglyza or saxagliptin is a typical add on drug, many times added to metformin, diet and exercise in order to control diabetes. Anxiety is not a typical side effect described to it, hypoglycemia or low sugar and/or headaches being among most common side effects. Talk to your treating doc about your symptoms and blood glucose readings.

That is elevated: But we need more information.  What was your glucose (sugar) level?  We need both pieces to have better information.  But in general, that Insulin level is elevated.

Accepted Answer

Yes: in the context of fasting, I'm doubtful that insulin has to be there at all. High levels would imply either a start of type II diabetes or uncontrolled insulin secretion from an insulin secreting tumor (non-cancerous moslty).

Insulin 28: Do you mean fasting insulin or fasting blood glucose? There is no need to measure insulin. If you blood sugar level is normal, relax! If the blood sugar is high you need more insulin. If the blood sugar is low you need less insulin. I presume you have Type 1 diabetes. If so you should consider continuous insulin infusion. Your primary doctor should be able to help you with this.
