No: But depending on the test method there are other causes of false positive. Did you do a guiac test of FIT test. FIT test has fewer false positives, but it only detects colonic bleeds.

: In some people NSAIDS cause blood in the GI tract causing positive FOBT. All tests have false positive and false negative tests un- predictably in individuals. so no study however extensive or mega will answer this question conclusively- and there is none.

can anything besides vitamin c cause false neg on an fobt? months now w/dark red gunk in cracks of stool. really looks like blood but ez detect test neg. i drink energy drinks w/a lot of citric acid?

used 2 of 3 strips in flushable home fobt kit. both strips neg after 2 minutes. but when i flushed, both times the strips floated back into toilet and now read bright blue positive. what's going on?

Contaminated: Once the time limit is passed or if contaminated (like with chlorinated water), can do odd things not attributable to the test. If properly (-) in correct window (2 min), then they were negative.

Yes.: Because hemorrhoids usually cause bright red blood, not positive FOBT.  You also need to make sure the blood is not coming from upper gi tract.  Consult with your gi specialist.

FOBT ?'s: Any positive test for blood in an FOBT test should be evaluated by a GI specialist.  Early detection/removal of pre-malignant sites of bleeding can decrease the rate of malignant conversion.  Ask your primary care physician for a GI referral.

FOBT: Tylenol, which does not irritate or inflame the gastrointestinal tract, will not cause occult bleeding and thus does not affect the result of FOBT.

Hemorrhoids: Bleeding can be from many different places. It's encouraging that you had a negative colonoscopy, but the bleeding could be from the upper part of your GI system as well. It also could be hemorrhoids. You should see your doctor soon so that you can be evaluated.

Bleeding.: Agents that cause inflammation of the gut, eg aspirin, anti-inflamatory drugs, alcohol, endocrine disease-addisons disease and  cushings disease; parasites, stomach acid or  gall bladder reflux into the esophagus; (rare) tumors of the small bowel including acid secreting tumors.  Are you iron deficient from bleeding or nonabsorption?
