: Long term treatment with benadryl (a sedating agent) can result in daytime sleepiness and other undesirable side effects. Try a non sedating anti-histamine such as loratadine(claritin) or fexofenadine(allegra). Talk to your prescribing Dr as sometimes the itching can turn into a more serious allergic reaction. They may want to change the treatment to another statin.

Both r antihistamine: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) (diphehydramine) is a 1st generation antihistamine, probably causes sedation, which might abate with continued usage, but has the problem of tolerance, (meaning u might need an extra dosage to have the same effect),  reactine (ceterizine) is 2nd generation, mostly nonsedating and doesn't cause tolerance, at any rate you need to be evaluated by an allergist to better direct ur therapy.

No: Benadry is an antihistamine. It's used in allergies, itching, runny noses, and sometimes for bedtime sedation. But not for panic disorders. The best medications for this are the ssri antidepressants, some older antidepressants, and, for acute attacks or until the other medications start to work, anti-anxiety meds. In combination with these, cognitive behavioral therapy may help.

my son is on clarithromycin and at night time can't stop coughing due to mucus. can i give him benadryl (diphenhydramine)??

Yes: I am guessing that the antibiotic is because the doctor thinks this could be pneumonia. Mucous is made in greater amounts with infections and allergies. It is important for the body to get mucous out of the lungs and so it is not good to give benedryl a lot and honestly it doesn't always help that much. 
If you are looking just for some mild relief for sleep benedryl will make you sleepy

Seek help: Discuss it with your healthcare provider how you can get off this addiction
you have to have the will and determnation to do it
it may be difficult to go cold turkey, and i usually recommend a step down approach, you have to calculate how much of the drug you are cosuming daily, and slowly at your pace reduce the dose every 2to3 days.It may take few weeks to few months but it will work.

You can, but: Be cautious, both are antihistamines, and you don't want to overdose, start with lower dose benadryl (diphenhydramine), (diphenhydramine) later stick to either benadryl (diphenhydramine) or fexofenadine (allegra). If you don't improve in a day or two, see your doctor, caution if Benadryl (diphenhydramine) makes you drowsy, don't drive, wish you wellness

Allergic reaction: You should probably get this checked out 'officially' -so I would call the doctor who prescribed the antibiotics or, go to the nearest Urgent Care center or Emergency Room. The main question is 'how bad' the allergic reaction is- if you have any breathing issues, throat swelling or swallowing trouble then that is an acute emergency and I would call 911. The EMTs have epinephrine which u might need
